Standalone: First Savile, now Parliament?!

First Jimmy Savile and now Parliament? What's our world coming to?

You would think that back in the days of Thatcher that her cabinet would be ruled with an iron fist but apparently not. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Conservative, was found to have members in her cabinet who have been revealed to be paedofiles. Why the gasp, you ask? Well would you like the thought of Parliament oogling your children or grandchildren? What makes them fit to run the country yet the rest of the generations with the same illness are hooked on prescribed medication or rotting in a dirty prison cell?

The sad but honest fact of the matter is, Peter Morrison is probably one of many politicians, who have abused their power and elitist status, using it to cover up illegal sexual acts they partake in. These revelations are the first of many, most political minded people would assure you of that. This scandal certainly isn't restricted to shady politicians however, back in September it was revealed that revered British icon and radio personality Sir Jimmy Savile had possibly raped/molested 10 women, many if not all whom were under-aged at the time the act(s) were committed. Since then the severity of the charges and the evidence supporting them has increased substantially and it is believed Sir Jimmy raped/molested at least 400 females, most of whom were under-aged. How did a man who abused 100s of children get away with it so easily?

Well it's quite simple really, the BBC covered it up and with-held evidence, why? To save their reputation from tarnish. Now am I trying to persuade you that the BBC is some satanic organisation? No. The message I'm trying to convey is that the "powers from above" will hide evidence in anyway shape or form to save their figureheads, whether it be the BBC, or the Conservative government of Thatcher, these cover ups are a lot deeper than one would think, and all citizens need to band together and demand the truth.

Standalone: Love - The "real" emotion?

Does Love rule above all or is it just a figment of our imagination? Are we cynical for not believing in it or are we just informed?
Regardless of your personal opinion, the ideology of Love co-exists around our daily lives. Whether it is spoon-fed via the television set or passing by a passionate embrace oblivious to the undesiring masses, Love is present.

In the 21st century are we still branded as cynics or even "un-believers" for not wanting to experience or witness Love in fruition? Are we going to be forced to accept the idea of Love and that it's always going to exist in our world?
A certain calender date "Valentines Day" exists, where couples should shower their significant other with Love, however if we do celebrate it, are we just giving into the soulless commercialization of the concept? Are we non-romantics if we decide not to conform to the "tradition" of celebrating this day?
Many indiviuals claim to exist solely due to the love of a companion or a significant other, but does Love even exist? Is it possible to feel the same "overwhelming" emotions for our daily mannerisms?
Could one feel the same infuation towards our jobs, our clothes, or our toasters for example?
The thought of doing so would make some of us titter to ourselves, however there are certain beings in this vast world who do have such an other-worldly attachment to items or "things" that we, as the public, could brand as crazy, or mentally unstable. However, if they are happy with that signficant other, are we one to judge? Specially as the majority of us from a young age are fed the concept of Love from leaving the mother's breast.
All in all, the concept of Love does not seem to be disappearing for a clear amount of time in our societies today.

Politics 101: Why care about politics? (2)

Politics is often viewed as a mundane, elitist topic, so why should we actually care about it?
Politics shapes the society we live in, our day to day lives, everything is affected, whether it be marriage rights; wars; our salaries or even basic necessities like healthcare, there is no way to escape the reality that political powers rule. In layman's terms, politics are the methods we use to guide, change and conserve society. The majority of people are concerned with issues that affect us, however voting turn-outs are at an all-time low. Do people care about these issues but not enough to vote?

The vast majority of countries benefit from "democracy". One commonly defined feature of "democracy" is the right to vote for who you want to represent you on a local and national scale.
So how could one gain political know-how if they know absolutely nothing about the topic?
      - Do your research, whether it be through videos, books or searching the Internet in general.
      - Try to find your own political standing, search for an ideology close to your beliefs instead of
following the crowd. (Even if you are heavily influenced by a certain ideology, it's good to do
your research, as to not run into any surprises.)
     -   Brushing up on political terms and concepts will aid you greatly.

In our Politics 101 blogs, we will cover political terminology, stretching from left to right wing. Stalin to Hitler, from centuries ago to the present day and beyond.

In conculsion, our first two blog posts have been nothing more than a taste of politics 101, we have tried our best to attempt to entice you into the world of politics, we hope to educate you on the political world we all reside in.

Standalone: Who is Mitt Romney?

(picture from sharecovers.com)

Election day is upon us, and with there being a very distinct possibility (approximately 50 %) of Republican candidate Mitt Romney becoming president, surely it's rather appropriate to ask, who is he? Who is Mitt Romney?

Background
Willard Mitt Romney was born March 12th 1947 in Michigan, he had a fairly normal but privileged upbringing; his early life could of course be discussed in great detail, but it isn't relevent, what is however relevent, is his experience in working as a buisness man, and as a politician.

Work History
Mitt Romney began working in the private sector in the late 1970's, quickly rising through the ranks, and by 1984 he had co-founded the infamous private equity investment firm Bain capital, through Bain, Romney invested in many private companys, some of these companys thrived, some of them crashed and burned, either way Romney and Bain made a dime.

First Step into Politics
By 1994 Mitt Romney had entered politics for the first time, running for senate in the state of Massachusetts, against long running, Democratic Senator Ted Kennedy. Mitt Romney styled himself as a fair, socially progressive but fiscally conservative individual, who could provide fiscal growth and a balanced budget for the state of Massachusetts. This however wasn't enough, and Ted Kennedy won the election.

Progression
Many would have assumed back then that this would of been the end of Mitt Romneys political life, but those pessimists couldn't of been further from the truth. In 1999 Mitt Romney was made the CEO, President, and Organiser of the 2002 Winter Olympic games of Salt Lake City, thanks to his organisation skills the games were a success. Shortly afterwards in 2002, directly after the games ended, Mitt Romney began his campaign to become governor of the state of Massachusetts. Using his success as CEO of the Olympics games, as a talking point and as justification for his possible election as governor.

Succession
Mitt Romney ran as a republican, on a socially progressive but fiscally conservative platform, similar to his 1994 campaign, he also preached bi-partisanship, which made him seem more moderate and more appealing to voters. Mitt Romney won, and had a fairly successful 4 years as governor of Massachusetts, with many achievments such as the implementation of universal health insurance for the state, lowered taxes, and a balanced budget, overall his tenure was seen as a positive one.

 Falling short
Mitt Romney, however did not run for a second term as governor, for he had set his sights on a much grander prize. On Febuary 13th 2007, Mitt Romney announced his candidacy for the 2008 Republican nomination for president, he ran a tough campaign but fell short of winning the candidacy, with John McCain becoming the nominee for the Republican party.

Nomination
However, Mitt Romney had not yet given up his presidential hopes, on June 2nd 2011 Mitt Romney, as expected by many, announced his candidacy for the 2012 Republican nomination for president; the race was a wipeout, with Romney easily becoming the Republican nominee on August 28th 2012.

Tiebreak
Since then Romney has campaigned hard, and partaken in three debates with President Obama, it's a close race, with the polls showing them neck and neck, it's anyones game. Now, here are a few interesting facts about Mitt Romney.

-Mitt Romney is a Mormon, and the first Mormon nominee for President, and if elected he would be the first Mormon President.
-Mitt Romney donates 10 percent of his yearly income to the Mormon church.
-His fathers parents fled to Mexico as pologamy was outlawed (pologamy being an important part of the Mormon religion), as a result, Mitt Romneys father (George Romney) was born in Mexico.
-Mitt Romney has changed his view on abortion multiple times.

Hopefully this post and revealed a little more information, about the illusive man, Mitt Romney.
If you have any views on Mr. Romney feel free to leave them below.

Standalone: How to learn languages (the correct way!)

Learning a language is a tough and lengthy task, but don't let it put you off. There are alot, and I mean ALOT of benefits to extending your linguistic knowledge. Even if it's just for work to get that raise, or to actually get by when you're in a foreign country (which means not just shouting louder in English hoping they'll get the jist.) Regardless of your reasons, we'll share with you some quick tips on the reliable methods of learning a language.

1) Be realistic, accept that fact that learning a language WILL take a long time. There is no quick fix methods or magical ways to get around it. (Think about people trying to learn English as a second language, we're virtually the same as them in their own tongue.)

2) Immerse yourself in the language. Listening and reading would be a good start. Whatever level you are at, there is resources out there suitable to your ability. Feel free to challenge yourself with resources however don't get down-hearted that you cannot understand the 6pm evening news in Arabic, (even in English it gets hard to follow.) Also, don't be embarrassed to pratice out loud, it's the only way to make sure your pronunciation is key.

3) Set a scheduele for when you are going to learn. Sitting there forcing yourself to learn will not make the language sink in any quicker. Being committed and building yourself up everyday is the key. Balancing a busy life, kids and trying to learn another language won't be easy, but even 5 minutes a day is better than no minutes at all.

Learning about the culture behind the language is also a great way of seeing how it's utilised...or how hard people have it in certain countries, (Take Switzerland for instance, swiss german, french and italian, how do they even communicate?!)

Focus on building up simple phrases and vocab first. Verb tables are a MUST, as verbs form virtually every sentence we speak. And there it is! The tools you need to learn a language! Stay committed and you'll be well on your way to fluency..eventually.

Politics 101: What is politics? (1)

Before teaching a subject, it's good to start by defining the term(s) you're working with, so that is how we will start our Politics 101 series, by defining the term this entire series is going to revolve around, "politics".

Well I and most people would define politics as the way in which people can run or guide society, whether through governmental or non governmental influence, now what we here at Simpletics will teach you, is the different ways of running society, and the consequences of these differing methods.

Next time, we shall continue by defining some basic political terms which have been used throughout history, aswell as delving deeper into the overall arc of politics, where does it come from? What is it's future? Come back next time to find out.
